What is a Shipping Container Floor Made of?
Dry Shipping Container Flooring
What is a shipping container floor made of? The flooring is made of 1 and 1/8th inch thick marine plywood; higher-quality, cross-laminated, and longer-lasting plywood. They are cross-laminated and made with waterproof glue. This does not come apart when exposed to moisture. The bottom of the container flooring and steel is coated with Tectyl, which is a thick anti-rust coating. Additionally, this also seals and protects the flooring. In all our years of being around containers, we have never seen a rodent chew through a container floor!
Specifications
Dry shipping container flooring is placed on top of steel floor cross members. Screwed into place, these cross members are typically on 12″ centers. During production, new containers are sprayed with oil-based undercoating.
According to Hapag-Lloyd, shipping container flooring is capable of carrying a forklift truck with a maximum axle load of 12,037 pounds. Items such as cars, trucks, skid steers, and tractors are all well under the limitations and are capable of easily storing these items.
How tall is the floor from the ground? That is 6.69291 inches from ground level to the interior floor surface.
Patching Container Floor
Depending on the circumstances, if the damage is too large and severe, we’ll remove and install replacement flooring of the same grade. That is to say, in cases of smaller damages, we may overlay a steel plate over the damaged area.

New Containers are Coming in with Bamboo Flooring
Like every industry, the container business is trying to find more environmentally friendly solutions. For example, bamboo is a new alternative currently being used in new productions for flooring. According to the Guinness World Records, some species of bamboo can grow up to 2.91ft/day – or 1.5 inches/hr! So, if you sit long enough with a bamboo culm, it might just grow before your eyes! How does bamboo grow? This makes bamboo a promising alternative to cutting down old-growth hardwoods.
