Marketplace Scams On The Rise
Facebook Marketplace Scams are on the rise. First, we want to ensure everyone knows that we DO NOT sell containers on Facebook Marketplace. The scammers are getting more and more sophisticated, and we are starting to get phone calls on a normal basis. Please report the account if you see our name, logo, or address with someone trying to sell you a container. Every little bit helps! You can report the listing by clicking on the three dots (…) in the top right corner and then choosing the reason for reporting. Shipping Container scammers are not just limited to FB Marketplace and span across the entire internet.
Quick Tips When Buying Online
- Is there a logo? Go to the company’s website and see if the logos match.
- Check the spelling. Is there an extra letter in the name? Does the website or logo have a misspelled word? Some scammers will add an additional or repeat letter.
- Verify the company’s physical address on Google Maps to ensure it’s an actual container business, not an empty lot or shopping mall.
- Call the number on Google Maps and verify the information you were given online.
- You should be able to see the containers before you buy it.
- Does the email domain match the company you are buying from?
- If the price sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.
- Scammers will also use aggressive sales tactics to pressure you into a quick decision without giving you a chance to do any research.
- Request a W-9 from the company. This IRS tax form will provide you with their Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN).
