PopcornTainer – Ultimate in Re-Purposing Retired Shipping Containers
Re-Purposing “Retired” Refrigerated Containers for Climate Controlled Solutions
First off, our customers are our inspiration. Andrew Bowman, with Pilot Knob Comforts, grows and distributes specialty popcorn from their family farm in Illinois . Andrew was needing a climate controlled storage solution for his product which could control temperature, humidity and airflow. After discussing his needs with our modification team, we were able to develop a system by re-purposing a retired shipping container for climate controlled solutions. Thus, included three 40′ insulated containers with all the bells and whistles. And the PopcornTainer Re-Purposing Retired Containers, were born!

We Started with Retired Refrigerated Containers.
Our modification team then started modifying these containers. First, they removed the non-working reefer machine. Second, they then installed a bulkhead and insulated walk through door. Afterwards, we prepped and painted the exterior of the shipping container. Installed strip curtains and then added interior lights.
Pictured below, the exterior mounted control box housed the Inkbird unit. This allows the A/C and heater to energize as temperature requirements dictate. This container not only features the CoolBot WIFI jumper, but also a monitoring system. This system monitors the interior and exterior temperature along with the humidity.
Then, we added all the goodies!
These containers were then fitted with the following modifications.
- 24,000 BTU A/C unit
- CoolBot Controller
- Inkbird Temperature Controller
- Electric Heater
- Dehumidification Unit
- Circulation Fans with Remote Monitoring.
The circulation fans, seen below, can be energized based on your needs. Such needs include temperature, humidity and volume of air movement desired.
PopcornTainer – the end result!
At last, we have a self-contained 40′ unit with 320 square foot of floor space. A 2300 Cubic Foot re-purposed refrigerated container of climate controlled storage space!
Re-purposing retired shipping containers, refrigerated or insulated, can offer many benefits. A benefit for either temporary and mobile cold storage needs. Not only for leased or rented property but also where building a permanent structure is not a viable solution. In some cases, the containers are not subject to property tax as they are a mobile structure.
If you have a special project requiring climate controlled capabilities, please give us a call! This includes even your basic cooler/freezer needs! Most importantly, we do our best to tailor a unit to your specific needs.
