What’s With the Humming?
I am sitting here listening to a hum coming from the shop room. No, it is not our shop Refrigerated Shipping Containers Manager Mike Doss happily humming, although I am sure he is prone to on occasion. The sound is coming from one of the various tools used in the shop to maintain and repair what we refer to as our Reefer Fleet.
This time of year, the majority of our rental reefer fleet is here waiting for the busy holiday season of October- January. Mr. Doss takes advantage of the off-season to repair and service our fleet, so it is in perfect running condition and ready to go when one our many retail customers books a rental.
We have been building our fleet of refrigerated containers for sale or rent quickly over the last few years. This is possible thanks to our life long friend, Mike Doss, who joined USA-Containers several years ago. President Mike Alecock and Mike Doss have worked together in the reefer and container businesses since the early 80’s. They have been very successful business partners and best of friends. Mike Alecock knows that our reefer fleet is in good hands and that Mike Doss is growing it efficiently and effectively. That’s really how the two Mikes roll.
Currently, we have dozens of reefers in our rental/sales fleet and are planning on adding another dozen by mid-summer. So just who rents or buys a refrigerated container and for what use? Well, you might be surprised. A large number of rentals are obvious. Wal-Mart rents a lot of our reefers to store Halloween candy, Thanksgiving turkeys, and Christmas hams, Restaurants rent for overflow food storage. But we do have rentals that just make you say, “Okay??” One of my personal favorites is a rental for livestock colostrums storage. Apparently there is a great need for bovine colostrum. Another one of my favorites is the storage of beautiful ice sculptures. And because I know you are thinking of this question… Yes, we have had several calls from mortuaries needing “cadaver coolers” but we have passed.
Back to the humming. We like to think of it as humming along building our business, but more importantly continuing to build our friendships with our wonderful employees, which are really our family members. Without them, we aren’t anything to hum about.
